Flashing-light toys can capture a baby’s attention, but they’re a little like empty calories for your baby’s brain. These distractions don’t help a baby’s eyes develop focus, gain the ability to track a moving object, or work together.
Your baby is fascinated with real-life cause and effect. Seeing how things work in the everyday world is foundational for their brain development.
Try taking your baby on a tour of the house: turning the lights on and off, opening and closing the cupboards, helping you get a drink out of the refrigerator. Talk about what you’re doing as you do it. As they get older, you can help your baby by putting your hand over theirs as you both manipulate different kinds of switches and handles.
